THE MAG / THE WHY
Why The Green ‘Un?
ANSWERED BY OLIVER BOOTH
An absolute institution of Sheffield, The Green ‘Un was a Saturday sports paper, which sadly ceased publication in 2013.
If you went to Hillsborough or Bramall Lane on a Saturday afternoon, by the time you got home on the bus you could pick up a copy from the newsagents. Keep your social media, give us our Green ‘Un back!
What made it special, was it featured the scores of non-league and local games, even youth grassroots football. If you scored a goal in your Under 10’s game , you’d get your name in the paper. You were practically famous! And you’d tell your mates it was a 20 yard screamer, when it was actually a 2 yard tap in. And you’d cut it out and stick it on your wardrobe door as a keepsake.
When it came to naming our social bar and cafe, it could only be named after this special paper that brought so much joy to so many. A real celebrator of the community, just like a good social club.
On its walls you’ll find old clippings of the paper. Maybe you’ll spot your name in a frame, many have.
The paper may be gone, but the name lives on.
