THE MAG / THE WHY

Why a place to love the game again?

ANSWERED BY SCOTT RILEY

The fact we use the word GAME says it all really. Growing up everything got turned into a game, usually involving a football. Someone dropping it down off the landing for one of us to control, knocking a can off a bin, playing garages or playing Wembley. Even the reason for calling it Wembley — because as kids the dream of being a footballer usually involved imagining scoring a winner at Wembley for your beloved club, dreams of pulling on the shirt and walking out in a stadium, playing football as a job or scoring the winner in the derby. Not the Gucci contract, the 3M followers, the insta perfect non-reality sponsored posts. It was about FUN with MATES the belly laughs, the arguments, the big uns vs young uns, the social skills you took from this, all revolved around the GAME.

Even hours on your own just imagining various scenarios whilst kicking the ball against a wall, If it didn’t involve a ball it was usually man hunt or hedge hoping (the Olympics of the council estates 🤣) but the moments we all shared as friends playing these games with a ball, brought us all closer to our dream of one day becoming a footballer. No distractions, no phones, no one telling you that your shit, no one tracking how fast you can run through an app or a heart monitor. Quite the opposite.

And when you did become good you found yourself on your own playing two man Wembley 🤣 Football (the game) should be about fun and doing something you love to do because of what you get from the game. A Place to love the game again is to speak to those people who walk through the door who may have fallen out of love with it. Our space is a place where fond memories can come flooding back, and a place for the new generation to get lost in a moment of fun forgetting all about what the modern version of the game brings with it. A chance to leave and talk about what you just did, to take the conversation home, to pull out your old scrap book clippings and go right back to when you loved the game, while the young un is out in the garden kicking the ball against the wall.

What a game we had!❤️
